Source Methodology

How we gather, verify, and attribute the information in our stories

Primary Sources

Wherever possible, The Empire Times reporters go directly to primary sources — official documents, court records, government data, academic research, and on-the-record interviews. We link to primary source material whenever it is publicly available.

Verification Standards

  • All factual claims must be verified by a minimum of two independent sources
  • Wire service reports are treated as one source only and must be corroborated
  • Statistical data is traced back to the originating institution or study
  • Quotes are verified with the speaker or their representative before publication

Anonymous & Confidential Sources

We rely on anonymous sources only when the information is in the clear public interest and cannot be obtained on the record. When we use anonymous sources:

  • At least one senior editor knows the source's identity
  • We describe the source's position or relationship to the story as specifically as possible
  • We explain why the source required anonymity
  • Anonymous sourcing is never used for personal attacks

Wire Services & Partner Content

The Empire Times may republish or build upon content from wire services and trusted media partners. Such content is clearly attributed. We independently verify major claims before publication.

Social Media & User-Generated Content

We treat social media posts as leads, not confirmed facts. Before publishing social-media-sourced information, our reporters independently verify it through additional reporting.
